Gum (periodontal) disease is a condition of inflammation in the gums, which may lead to critical damage to your oral health. There are several stages of periodontal disease ranging from mild to advanced. The first phase is gingivitis, which is caused by a buildup of plaque in the gum pockets. If not treated, gingivitis can develop into the second stage called periodontitis, which affects the fibers and bone that support your tooth roots. Advanced periodontitis is the last stage of periodontal disease, which may cause loose or lost teeth. To take care of periodontal disease, Michael F. Alspaugh, DDS provides both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options, depending on the intensity of the disease, such as antibiotics, scaling and root planing, gum surgery, gum tissue grafting, and tooth extraction. When you have signs of gum infection, contact our office in Edmond, OK to schedule an exam with a member of our staff.

Periodontal disease treatments will be determined by the seriousness of the infection. After our team diagnoses you with gum disease, we will discuss some suggestions for your treatment plan. If the gum disease is caught early, scaling and root planing (SRP) may be done to clean out the gum pockets. In more advanced cases, an antibiotic may be prescribed in addition to numerous SRP treatments. Acute cases of gum disease typically need a surgical procedure, such as pocket reduction or gum grafting.

Super cool staff, knowledgeable and informative. Michael sat with me and explained my periodontal disease and what I can do to help curb losing more teeth faster than I should, never has any other dentist taken the time he did to explain to me just what's going on, even set me up with a gum specialist. Treated me like a friend not just a possible new patient, let me tell you that I was totally blown away by the way I was treated that I immediately switched from my dentist of 15 years to Michael's practice. Michael told me he likes to spend more time with each person and have less patients and I think that's also very amazing, so many doctors/ dentists have turned to this high volume instead of high quality care and the patient is the one who suffers, anyway thank you so much Michael and your staff from your receptionist to your assistant for a job well done! I will be back.
